(musical theatre mix/soprano, dance) A postulant at Nonnberg Abbey – young, free spirited, warm, gentle and kind with much determination.
|Captain Georg von Trapp||
(baritone, moves well) A retired Austrian naval captain. Educated, polished, yet very military in the way he runs his life, his home and his childrens' lives. The father of seven, he is a widower. He represses his sadness over the death of his wife; underneath, he is warm, understanding, and determined.
(legit soprano, wide vocal range, very strong actress) Motherly, understanding, strong and authoritative, but kind.
(alto, moves well) Mistress of Novices, prudish, straight laced with a quick tongue, she is less tolerant than other nuns.
(mezzo, moves well) Mistress of Postulants, very kind, understanding and concerned.
(soprano, moves well) Neither demanding nor critical, sticks with the rules.
(non-singing) The von Trapp butler, rather formal but not without spirit, he is very German and loyal to the Fascist cause.
(non-singing) The housekeeper, stoic, very little personality; she does her job efficiently but without affection. Strong and somewhat dominating.
|Liesl von Trapp||
(mezzo, dance) The oldest child, blossoming into a young lady with an interest in boys. She has a maternal edge to her and cares very deeply for her younger siblings.
|Friedrich von Trapp||
Tough exterior, very much trying to be “the man” of the family.
|Louisa von Trapp||
The trickster of the family, full of mischief
|Kurt von Trapp||
(age range 10-15, falsetto) Gentle and a peacemaker.
|Brigitta von Trapp||
(age range 9-14) Smart, reads a lot, always tells the truth, even when it may be inappropriate.
|Marta von Trapp||
(age range 7-12) Very sweet and gentle.
|Gretl von Trapp||
((age range 5-10) Very cute, just wants to be loved.
(low tenor, dance) A tenor, ideally a strong dancer or very good mover, 16-27. Rolf is a telegraph delivery boy on bicycle and is later drawn in to the nazi Youth movement. He and Leisl have fallen in love, and they look for every opprtunity to see one another.
(tenor/baritone, moves well) Charming and vital; a man of sophistication who enjoys the good life; true and loyal friend to the von Trapp family. Some comic relief.
|Baroness Elsa Schraeder||
(mezzo soprano, moves well) A baroness of taste and elegance, sophisticated, dignified and mature. She loves the Captain in a measured way; he represents good social standing and a continuation of the comfortable, luxurious lifestyle she enjoys.
(non-singing) Stern and unsmiling, a typical Nazi official whose primary concern is to see that everyone toes the line.
|Admiral von Schreiber|
|Men and Women Ensemble Menbers||
(16-60+ years) To play Nuns, novices, postulants, Nazis, guests at the Captain's party, and Contestants in the Festival Concert.
When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain's immediate service in their navy. The family's narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. The motion picture version remains the most popular movie musical of all time.
