Plot Synopsis

DMTC YPT Godspell, JR. - VIRTUAL PERFORMANCE

September 18 through September 20th, 2020 Join the Davis Musical Theatre Company’s Young Performers’ Theatre Division for a special virtual production of Godspell, JR, presented as a free, live online event on Facebook Live! We’ve combined technology and creativity to bring you this story with an eclectic blend of songs ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, including the memorable and upbeat “Day by Day.” Adapted from the original Broadway hit, Godspell, this shortened version retains a hefty dose of comic timing and celebrates universal themes which will resonant with people from all spiritual backgrounds, such as kindness, love and tolerance. Performances of Godspell,JR will take place on a single weekend: Friday, September 18th tthrough Sunday, September 20th.

All performances (online streaming live with songs pre-recorded, but some scenes will be done live at each performance) will be free, donations are encouraged (there will be a “Donate” link on the broadcast).

All Roles Open - any role may be performed by an actor of any gender

Role Description
Jesus

(Can be played by any gender)
Jesus is a natural born teacher.  This performer is a good singer who can take on a leadership position without being bossy or judgmental.  Jesus must convincingly display a full array of emotions during the show.

Judas/John The Baptist

(Can be played by any gender)
One performer plays both these roles.  This cast member opens the show singing a cappella, and should have a strong voice.  They must be charismatic in the opening, headstrong and critical in the middle of the show, and eventually turn on Jesus in the end.

“Day By Day” soloist

(Can be played by any gender)
This soloist must have great power and be able to liven up the stage with this great celebratory iconic number.

“Learn Your Lessons Well” Soloist 1 & 2

(Can be played by any gender)
These performers must be great enunciators and engaging storytellers who can sing with some soul.

“O Bless The Lord My Soul” Soloist

(Can be played by any gender)
This cast member should be an excellent musician with good vocal control and power.

“All Good Gifts” Soloist

(Can be played by any gender)
This actor sings a heartfelt ballad.  They should not only have a beautiful voice, but also be able to express honest, simple emotions while singing.

“We Beseech Thee” Soloist

(Can be played by any gender)
This song should be sung by a fun-loving actor who can bring the crowd’s energy up.  They should be able to move and groove while singing well.

“Light of the World” Soloist

(Can be played by any gender)
Another performer with a big, powerful, soulful voice who can move and groove while singing.

“Beautiful City” Soloist

(Can be played by any gender)
This singer should be able to bring everyone together and deliver the message of the show in a beautiful, sincere song.

Narrators

(Can be played by any gender)
There are a whole multitude of narrators throughout the show.  These actors should have clear voices and be comfortable telling a story.

Ensemble

(Can be played by any gender)
These cast members are the heart of Godspell Junior.  They will playfully enact the parables and eventually become the community led by Jesus.  Amongst this group we will find featured dancers and back-up harmony singers.
