Plot Synopsis

Based on the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, this new Disney musical tells the story of Jack Kelly, a rebellious newsboy who dreams of a life as an artist away from the big city. After publishing giant Joseph Pulitzer raises newspaper prices at the newsboys' expense, Kelly and his fellow newsies take action.

Role Description
Jack Kelly

The charismatic leader of the Manhattan newsies, Jack is an oprhaned dreamer and artist who yearns to get out of the crowded streets of New York and make a better life for himself out West. Fiercely loyal with a tough-guy exterior, Jack has a big heart and can demonstrate a sweet vulnerability.  Bb2-A4.

Katherine Plumber

An ambitious young reporter fighting against the sexism of the journalism industry.  Quick, funny, and resourceful with brief dance solo.  A3-F5

Joseph Pulitzer

A pompous businessman and Katherine's no-nonsense father.  Pulitzer's out-of-touch economic strategies fatten his own wallet at the cost of the well-being of the newsies that work for him.  C3-F4

Davey

A straight-laced leader who serves as the brains of the resistance, Davey is a big brother to Les and many of the other newsies.  D3-A4

Les

A precocious and cheeky younger newsie, Les is a pint-sized charmer.  Db3-Bb3

Crutchie

Though he walks with the assistance of a crutch, Crutchie leans harder on a sense of humor and optimistic resilience.  Should move well.  C3-A4

Medda Larkin

This big-voiced star of the Bowery offers her theater as a safe haven for the newsies. An astute entertainer with great comic delivery, she’s a good friend to Jack and stands firmly behind the newsies. F3-E5

Wiesel

"Weasel" runs the distribution window for the World and is a greasy, sarcastic, and disgruntled middleman between Pulitzer and the newsies. Minimal movement and singing required.

Newsies

Heavy dancing, singing,  and stage combat, the newsies are the heartbeat of New York, striking when Pulitzer raises their newspaper prices.  Many vocal and movement solos.  All genders will be considered for newsies.

Townspeople

Some townspeople will double as Pulitzer's staff, the Bowery Beauty performers, and the Delanceys.  Not all, but some will be required to move in dance or stage combat.
